Portfolio Galleries

Galleries display recent two-dimensional work by Melissa Williams, completed after 2020. Her latest drawings are influenced by minimalism and reducing environmentally harmful art-material waste; as a result, most sketches are composed on a small scale. Using ink, graphite, or charcoal, Melissa explores each tool’s range for delicate mark-making. She focuses her skill on textural effects that will translate across digital screens with the same intimacy one would witness in-person.

Melissa enjoys portraiture in all of its classical and modern forms. She has a growing interest in animal subjects. Historically, she finds few received the status of solo portraits - their kindred intelligence never depicted nor examined as closely as human faces.  A likewise affinity for nature is exhibited in her landscape works, which are bittersweet chronicles of living in a region heavily changed by agriculture, invasive species, and hurricanes.

Attachment to things past and present is embraced in Melissa’s artwork. Inspired by blues and early jazz music, her creations arise from a place of sharp reminiscence.  Rendering images in the same candor of blues lyricism distinguishes her style, and is identifiably sought by clients of her commissioned drawings and paintings.

"The memory of things gone is important to a jazz musician. Things like old folks singing in the moonlight in a back yard on a hot night, or something said long ago." - Louis Armstrong
